And drawing back from my own (fairly low-key) issues for a moment. Betterhelp Sutton…could e-counselling be the answer to the mental health issues escalating amongst under-30s? With cuts to psychological health services truly beginning to bite, digitised therapy could be simply the ticket for young adults who currently filter nearly every element of their lives– good friends, work, sex, home entertainment– through a screen.
Not everyone is totally encouraged that shifting psychological health care online is the method forward. “For me, what operate in therapy is when you meet somebody face-to-face, in the exact same space,” says London-based psychotherapist Sandra Tapie. “You get to know not just what it resembles to talk with the individual, but how it feels to be in a space with them. Utilizing Skype is the next best thing: it’s ‘sufficient’, but it does not create the nearness, the intimacy, that really gets people to open up and check out things.”
” I’ve performed some research study into Skype counselling,” states London-based psychotherapist Dr Aaron Balick, “and it’s not the ‘functional equivalent’ of standard counselling; it’s just not quite the same thing. It’s really important that people who take part in it know that it’s a various experience from being in the space with somebody, speaking face-to-face.”
” In terms of ease of access, it’s a great start and absolutely better than nothing. It’ll ideally lead them to ultimately appearing in the room. Nevertheless, if you’re struggling with relationship issues, accessory problems, or deeper concerns, it’s much better to be in the room with someone. Skype and the web offers a range from your counsellor that may not be practical.”
In cases of mild depression, the NHS is now directing some patients towards online programmes instead of face-to-face counselling, a phenomenon that concerns Dr Balick.
