Not everybody is completely encouraged that moving psychological health care online is the method forward. “For me, what operate in therapy is when you satisfy somebody face-to-face, in the same space,” states London-based psychotherapist Sandra Tapie. “You are familiar with not only what it’s like to talk to the individual, but how it feels to be in a space with them. Utilizing Skype is the next best thing: it’s ‘sufficient’, however it does not develop the closeness, the intimacy, that truly gets individuals to open up and explore things.”
” I’ve performed some research into Skype counselling,” says London-based psychotherapist Dr Aaron Balick, “and it’s not the ‘functional equivalent’ of conventional counselling; it’s just not quite the same thing. It’s truly crucial that people who participate in it are aware that it’s a different experience from being in the space with somebody, speaking in person.”
” In terms of availability, it’s a great start and absolutely better than absolutely nothing. It’ll hopefully lead them to eventually revealing up in the space.
In cases of mild depression, the NHS is now directing some clients towards online programs instead of face-to-face counselling, a phenomenon that concerns Dr Balick.
